Flag Officers' ColumnsOur Monthly Update from the CBYC Officers Commodore Tom Eskridge
March is here and the Opening Day season starts in earnest. Susan and I will be attending as many as possible. This past month we attended the Southern California Cruiser Association installation dinner; where one our own, Marla Brown was installed as Commodore for 2010. Add to that the Catalina Fleet 24 annual dinner, LAYC opening day, and a SCYA monthly meeting. It makes for a full schedule when you consider all the daily requirements. It is busy schedule and fortunately Susan and I enjoy meeting and getting to know so many Southern California boating people. Bob DeBona is our new Port Captain. Susan and I had dinner with Bob and his wife Deborah this past month and he accepted the Port Captain position. Bob is a long time boater from the east coast. Phil Costillo, a long time Southern California boater, is the new Power Fleet Captain. I think Phil will get this position active again. The Staff Commodores have begun work on updating various policies and procedures. Shortly I hope to have a bylaw review committee busy with recommendations to improve their application to the present day club situation. I hope you will take notice of the display at the office regarding the State Water Ways Control Board’s request to have all marinas with 10 or more slips to obtain a permit to operate. The permit would require those marinas to conduct weekly, monthly, semi-annual and annual water tests at a very high cost to the operators. This would be a total budget buster for CBYC, maybe in the $100k range. Read about it, complete one of the supplied letters and send it to RBOC to take to Sacramento. Vice Commodore Mark Rhodes
Spring is around the corner and as we begin to prepare for Opening Day, I’d like to reflect on the tremendous amount of effort going into this club by many of the volunteer membership. In particular, I compliment the on-going efforts by our House and Aesthetics Committees on their revitalization of the dining room with new wallpaper and yachting pictures in the near future. Welcome back are the Bar Parties, the Birthday Bars, and our favorite first Sunday Pot Lucks. Special thanks to the Social Committee volunteers and the extra effort each and everyone put forth in making the Super Bowl Party, the Valentine’s Day Dinner, and the Biker Party such great successes! You make this club better for everyone, thank you! Chef Keith and wife Jen continue to create exceptional meals in our galley. They have made some great meals and they support for our guests. I am extremely grateful for their dedication! I encourage you to take advantage of their hospitality and fare! For those inclined to pursue some fishing, don’t forget about the Fred Hall Fishing and Tackle show the first week of March! Perhaps you could grab some lunch with me on the 5th with Royal Star Captain Simms, cruise the show, and tie up at the Club for dinner. Please come join me!
Amongst other happenings around the club this month is the Commodore’s Ball with a great band for dancing the night away. Hope to see you there! Rear Commodore Lee Tower
As of this writing, the Midwinter Regatta for 2010 is kicking off the racing season at CBYC with the Mercury class. We expect about 20 - 25 racers. Other area clubs host other classes and PHRFs to round out the roster. The SCYA Race Management Seminar on Feb. 13th at ABYC was well attended and included Tom Eskridge, Dixon Hall, Hank Brightly, Don Zinn, Steve McJones and myself.
An updated Race Schedule is in this publication. One recent addition is the J-80 Regatta July 10-11th. To get you and your crew tuned up for racing, plan to come on out on March 7th for the Rapid Starts, which is a series of very short races, to provide practice for race crews. We should be on the water and ready to go about noon. It is also great for beginners. Other events in March include the Spring Regatta, which is a Farr 40 race which may include Jr sailors, and the Ebisu-Cal 20 Match Racing. Dennis Dyer is the PRO for both.
I am pleased to announce that Margret Zinn has taken the reins as the new Cruise Chairperson to lead the cruising activities. The next cruise is the Easter Cruise to the Isthmus the 1st weekend of April hosted by the Zinns, and Margret is looking for a host for a possible cruise in April to Newport following the start of the Ensenada Race.
Fleet Captain Linda WIlson-Gray
Hi All! February has been a good month for the Junior Program! We had eight Opti sailors competing in the Opti Midwinter Championship at LAYC. Our kids did quite well and everyone had a blast. The Duck Race on Saturday was a riot! High School Sailing continues to go strong. All you rib BBQers and chili cooks take notice! We’re gearing up for a Junior Auction and Rib & Chili Cook-Off on May 29th! Fire up your grills, smokers, chili pots, or cooking vessel of choice and get ready to show your stuff! As for the auction, there will be some very nice items for sale on the block. Don’t miss out; it’s going to be a fun and festive event! See ya around the club! |
