The Friday Sailing Program is open to all level youth sailors. From beginners to advanced racers, there is a spot for you to join. Opti trainers, Optimists and CFJ's are available to anyone wanting to come down. Fridays are a great way to lead young sailors into the CBYC advanced team. This is a fun after school program that runs all year long!

Schedule Spring Semester 2023


Friday sailing schedule is divided into two semesters. Semester one will begin January 13 and conclude May 26, Friday's from 3-6 at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club.
No Sailing on school holidays and breaks.


Equipment


Opti Trainers will be used for beginning sailors. The Opti Trainers are a durable plastic version of the Optimist.


The Optimist, used by advanced sailors, is designed to be safe, durable and competitive. The skills the Optimist fosters can be directly translated into other classes later on.


Students will be responsible for personal equipment including PFD.

 

Who can attend?


The program is open to any youth interested in learning how to sail that can pass the swim test given the first day of camp. Participants must be at least eight years of age.

 

Eligibility

 

Anyone between ages 8 and 16 is eligible to participate. Simply get in touch with the coach, and ask for a try-out! The first two practices are free and scholarships are available.

 

Prerequisites


Students must be confident swimmers. A swim test will be given on the first day of class. No exceptions will be made to this requirement. A completed participation waiver and a medical form must be on file.

 

All sailors must be willing and able to follow all social distancing guidelines on and off the water.

 

Parents are expected to inform their children that proper self-discipline is required while in the program. All sailors and parents will sign a Code of Conduct. Violations of safety or other program rules may result in disciplinary action including suspension or dismissal from the program without a refund.

 

CBYC is committed to maintaining a safe and positive environment for its participants.

 

Things to bring


The following must be brought to class every day:

  • US Coast Guard approved life vest. The jacket type is recommended.
    The life vest must be worn at all times on the dock or in the boat. NO VEST – NO SAILING!
  • Closed toe shoes. Sneakers are preferred.
  • Sunblock (SPF 15 or greater) should be applied before class.
  • Sunglasses, a hat, and a swimsuit are recommended.
  • Water
  • Change of clothing, Towel, Insect repellent
